dharma vs. karma, and the Now

Karma is what you’re born with, and this includes environment. How you play it is dharma. Dharma is the integrity with which you face karma, and how this works out is what life is all about.

Dharma is to be true to your karma: the sum total of all past thought, word and deed, as represented by past lives. You cannot help but be defined by the past and its consolidation in the present, but how you relate to it, how you honor it, is everything. Attitude is everything.

Karma renews itself endlessly, like a snake perpetually shedding its skin. Each moment is the expression of past karma and the creation of future karma. And what you pack into the suitcase of this life, is what you live out of the next life. Only the Now is creative. The past is dead and only becomes alive in the Now. Likewise, the future is predicated on the Now. Only the Now exists. Only attitude exists.

The Now is creative because it alone can witness, because it alone can be detached from the corpse of the past and its reanimation in the future. Only the Now is alive.

All this is why Remembrance is the key. What you remember in the Now transmutes the past to become the future, in the Now. Remembrance of the beloved manifests the beloved, and is the path to be with him or her forever, in the Now.

Going Green is Going Cold Turkey

The new film produced by Michael Moore, Planet Of The Humans, challenges how we think of going Green. Seriously, how do we get off fossil fuels? Do we have the slightest idea of what this involves and implies? Do we cut down forests to burn chipped wood as a biomass substitute for coal and gas? How is Green infrastructure built and maintained without fossil fuels? The answer is that it’s not. And then what? Discuss this on the smart phone and laptop full of rare metals gouged from the earth?

This film very dramatically makes the case that we are babies prattling about collective suicide. And that there is a whole lot of disaster capitalism promoting delusional solutions.

What will it take for citizenry to grok the crisis of sustainability? People do not realize that the entire basis of modern living is unsustainable. And this is the problem. We can’t go there. We can’t admit that the planet can not possibly continue to support a consumer based lifestyle for a fraction of the present world population, which is increasingly concentrated in mega cities of 10 million or more.

The modern city is entropic. And so are the suburbs. Both only exist because of fossil fuel- energy as concentrated capital, and which serves to destroy a living bond with Nature. There is no way for a modern city to go Green. There is no way for a world economy based on globalism to go Green. There is no way for any living arrangement to go Green except on a decentralized basis. Only local economies can establish a sustainable relationship with Nature, a relationship not based on relentless resource extraction and degradation, but on living in harmony with the land and one another.

Going Green is going cold turkey.

Why You Should Not Vote For The Monster King Baby Trump

Why you should not vote for the monster King Baby Trump.
Rumors say King Baby was made in a neoliberal laboratory in an experiment that went badly. This is embarrassing to neoliberal scientists who disavow the fact. They deny all reports that claim such paternity. And they will track, trace and isolate anyone who makes this assertion. Like the Chinese state party enforcers. The official story is that King Baby is a mutated random event: all evolution is entirely random, without design and just cleverly opportunistic. And King Baby got loose somehow. But neoliberals had nothing to do with it.
Please don’t buy this fake news. It’s totally bogus fake and junk news. Garbage news. Neoliberal scientists will take care of this. They will track and trace this monster and isolate him, although they didn’t create him. The expert Clinton Foundation Laboratories is working on this. CEO Corn Pop is in charge.

The Great Interregnum

After a sovereign dies and before succession is assured, the intervening period poses uncertainty. This state of affairs can be perilous, as the status quo abhors disruption and loves continuity.

We are now in a great spiritual interregnum signified by Meher Baba, the Avatar/ Prophet of the age, having dropped his body in 1969 but who will remain largely incognito until the Perfect Masters assume a public role in revealing his destiny. This period, according to Baba, is about 100 years long. Baba has explained that it is as if he is still physically alive during this time period, that he indeed continues to reign as the sole spiritual sovereign. And he has explained that this is why his lovers- his very close ones, those privileged to have come within the orbit of his grace, should hold fast to him and not be allured by claimants and impostors to his throne.

This time period, this Great Interregnum, which has about 50 years left before it is over, is a most special and perilous time. This period is preliminary to the Avatar/ Prophet’s public manifestation. This is a time of quiet conviction on the part of his lovers, who remain loosely organized and relatively unknown to the general public. It is during this time period that a personal relation to the Avatar is most possible by forging and renewing a connection with him through remembrance. This time period is the greatest opportunity to develop an unmediated relationship to the Avatar- because it is as if he is still physically alive, and because he represents the sole functioning of God in the universe.

This Great Interregnum only really applies to those with the great fortune to have already come into the orbit of the Avatar/ Prophet. The world is not even aware that the King of kings has come and is now seemingly gone. The world will come to recognize that the long anticipated return of the Christ has happened only long after the fact, and only when the time is right- that is when the requisite suffering compels man to turn to God.

The coming fifty years represents the mounting suffering and despair required to bring the world to the feet of the Avatar. Baba has said that this manifestation of the Avatar will be the greatest, that he will be regaled as the universal Avatar; but that this will only happen through the greatest suffering.

The world will have to give up the many false gods to once again embrace the One God, the King of kings; chief among these false gods is the goddess Progress, the idol that has incited more blasphemy than all the others combined. Scientific materialism and the worship of technology in the service of greed is cooking the planet like fabled cannibals boiling colonialists in a giant pot.

We are cooking ourselves to death, until suffering and despair compels us to cry out for Mercy.

When we have been reduced to crying out for our food

When we have been reduced to crying out for our food
we will then at last begin to believe in brotherhood.

When we refuse to support the Spy and War Machine
we can then march our politicians to the guillotine.

When we rise up and refuse to endorse doublespeak
we can then devote song to pure and holy lyric.

When we rise up and dance and dance to single malt
we can then kick arse of ev’ry bloody poly-dolt.

O Yes, CEO and general will be swiftly exiled
and with ten thousand joyous boot reviled.

This world a loss and Christmas punted to heaven
and dark mangled earth the romp of clever satan.

But now hungry Darvish reveals pure amber secret:
Sun rises in his glass and the friend bright and discreet.

The Next 50 Years

The next 50 years will represent a descent into increasing chaos: we are in clusterfuck terror-tory. Apart from political outcomes- which don’t look at all good, the problem of fossil fuel induced climate change, a burning planet, environmental degradation from a myriad sources, overpopulation, the sickness of factory farming, pandemics, a decreasing potable water supply, the ubiquity of guns and ammo- especially here in the US, the complete inability of cogent leadership to rise above prevailing obfuscation, the shocking failure of Big Media to properly inform the public, the utter indifference to real support for public education and perhaps above all the fascist exaltation of violence embodied in US foreign policy- all this is resolving into sharp simultaneous focus.

What is happening is the collective inability to account for the complete failure of industrialism, corporatism and militarism to provide a sustainable future- when this tragic failure is staring us in the face. We are all trapped on a Princess cruise ship with a flotilla of lethal icebergs before us and don’t have a clue what to do.

On approaching Hafez in translation

My recommendation is to follow this guideline: eschew any book or source material that spells Hafez’s name with an i, as in Hafiz. Hafez properly rhymes with Fez, not with fizz. This is most important because correct pronunciation is essential. If an author or editor can’t pronounce Hafez’s name correctly, it’s probably trash. It suggests that abstraction rather than sensibility is uppermost. After all, poetry is all about sound and sensibility.

Today, the eternal beloved our sweet lord

Today, the eternal beloved our sweet lord
left his body and released the divine Word.

His Silence held us in his loving embrace
and broken, exiled us to long for his grace.

Now, he has forsaken us but lives in the heart
and speaks to us, promising never will he part.

Long, long ago we made a covenant with God:
our loyalty is to the Prophet- signed in blood.

We are the ones who cling to his kamli coat;
We are the ones who praise with golden note.

The Word that was made flesh and now released
beats within us, lives on our lips, never to cease.

Darvish sings, O glorious eternal Ancient One
your divine Name is our bright transcendent Sun.

Reconciliation with Sufism re-Reoriented

A resolution of the problem of Sufism re-Reoriented is most desirable. The 1980 Bell of Warning was just such an attempt on the part of Eruch Jessawala and Mani Irani; unfortunately, it was unsuccessful.

The unresolved issues 40 years later can perhaps be summarized as the following:

1) The foundation narrative/ myth promulgated by Ivy Duce that Baba had promised a continuous lineage of illumined murshids for the next 700 years must be abandoned.

2) That SR will adhere to Baba’s injunction to maintain good boundaries with other Baba groups, i.e. not attempt to convert Baba lovers from their direct path to SR’s indirect path.

3) The necessity for a frank admission on SR’s part that the Sufi Charter presents both a great opportunity for those drawn to such a path, but that it also presents a potential spiritual tragedy unless guided by absolute honesty. Baba made it perfectly clear that he would guide SR only on the basis of absolute honesty.

The onus lies with SR to redress these issues. It can do so from the top down, or from the bottom up. Either senior leadership can institute the necessary changes, or the democratic provisions embodied in the Sufi Charter can demand the necessary changes.

The brilliant thing about the Sufi Charter is that it fully allows for the organization’s membership to demand and enforce that the organization abide by absolute honesty.

Speculative Thoughts On Baba’s Work With Sufism Reoriented

A friend of mine relates that Steve Edelman once asked Eruch Jessawala, “what was Baba’s (divine) mistake?”, to which he replied at once, “Sufism Reoriented”. This comes as no surprise given Eruch’s role as point man in addressing the twisted fate of SR with Ivy Duce appointing Jim Mackei as her alleged illumined successor in 1980.

Eruch famously rang the “Bell of Warning” in 1980, at Baba’s own order; Eruch relates that Baba “lifted” him out of his body while in Mandali Hall and into Baba’s incorporeal presence, and ordered him to ring the Bell of Warning.

So, the question is, what was Baba up to in “allowing” this mistake to happen in the first place? Any answer to this question is speculative of course, but Baba lovers- and others, are compelled by the enormity of the problem to seek answers.

Baba’s agreement to assist in writing the charter that served as the incorporation of SR was perhaps the single most enigmatic “work” of his advent. It can be contrasted to Baba’s assistance in the writing of Meher Center’s charter, which made it a non denominational Universal Spiritual Center which promotes the “direct” path to God, as opposed to a denominational and mediated path as an “indirect” path. Here is Baba’s statement on the matter:

http://www.meherlegacy.org/uploads/2/4/9/3/24931365/1952.july.20-baba_discourse_to_sufis.pdf

Why would Baba grant a charter to a reoriented sufi lineage that at once confers on it the status of an indirect path? Isn’t there a colossal and baffling irony in this very act? Sufism, historically considered, is based on a personal relationship to saints and spiritual masters who derive their authority from the Prophet.

Baba’s own definition of Sufism, given in the context of discussing the Sufi Charter, states that only the relationship to the Prophet and Perfect Master properly defines sufism: see

Section 1 of the Sufi Charter, point #3

“By cherishing the fact that Sufism is mainly based on a definite acceptance of a God-Realized master and complete adherence to his guidance.”

and

From Notes On The Interview of Mrs. Duce, Miss Duce and Francis Brabazon at Myrtle Beach, 1952

“Sufism as understood by 99% of the people is not real Sufism. The terms sheikh, murshid, mureed are so lightly treated that real Sufism is lost sight of. As Jallaludin says- the only way to know Sufism is not by words or practices or discipline, but by becoming dust at the feet of the Master.”

Given that Baba felt so strongly about what defines “real” sufism, i.e. surrenderance to the Prophet/ Perfect Master, why would he agree to create an institutionalized sufi order based on the honorific status of its leadership? It makes no sense.

In fact, Francis Brabazon saw this at once. He had been conferred the status of sheikh in Inayat Khan’s sufi order, which he knew to be purely honorific- and not remotely approaching the status of a real murshid, which is itself infinitely removed from the status of a Perfect Master. He therefore declined to accept the leadership of an independent branch of Sufism Reoriented in Australia. Baba was enormously pleased with him.

To the contrary, Adi K. Irani has said that he discerned displeasure on Baba’s part when Ivy Duce accepted her role as murshida for America.

Baba did very clearly state that the Sufi Charter was to serve as a template for the reorientation of the principal religious “isms” as well. This alerts us at once to the symbolic nature of the work he was engaged in, i.e. the reorienting of all the world’s major religions to the singular reality of the Avatar/ Prophet and Perfect Master in defining religious and spiritual life.

According to both Eruch J. and Don Stevens, Baba told murshida Duce that her sufi order “would have an illumined murshid from time to time”. There is absolutely no evidence of any kind that Baba promised a continuous lineage of either murshids or Perfect Masters for the next 700 years. This assertion by murshida Duce is a complete fabrication. But SR has accepted this narrative as a founding truth.

Maybe the fate of SR is to serve as a cautionary tale of what happens when absolute honesty is sacrificed for a spiritual ambition that would have its cake and eat it too. Baba did, after all, condition his promise to help Ivy Duce in her honorific role as murshida upon “absolute honesty”.
